What is MakerSpace? What does it have to do with STEM in the Library?
STEM in the library is known as MakerSpace. MakerSpace lessons allow students to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in the library. In fact, MakerSpace activities teach students that STEM can be applicable outside of the regular classroom and into real-life situations. In addition, being a former science teacher and now a school librarian, I help guide students to the variety of STEM topics and books found in the library; thereby, increasing information literacy beyond fiction books. When Montgomery students do MakerSpace in the library they are exploring topics such as engineering, coding, programming, math, technology, science, creativity, art, literacy, team work, public speaking, etc. Studies have shown that students need a balance of fiction and nonfiction books in order to boost their reading fluency, comprehension, and understanding.
